Over the years, I've met so many nurses who didn't know about all the nurse career options available to them.  While the greatest need for nurses is in patient care settings, there are a lot of companies hiring nurses for non-patient care positions.   Here's a tiny sample of countless alternative nursing career options.  The experience and education needed for these positions will vary across the country and within organizations.
  1. Telephonic Case Manager

Nurse who collaborates with interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, social worker and other medical professionals to ensure patients receive the appropriate health services and resources.

Telephone Triage Nurse

Triage patients over the phone by asking questions, assessing the patient’s situation and determining the care needed.

Quality Improvement Nurse

Nurse who reviews records to analyze, initiate and assist in the management of care provided to patients.

Virtual Healthcare Recruiter

You will help to recruit qualified candidates to fill open healthcare positions.  You will obtain requirements from the employer.

 Informatics Nurse

Assisting with the implementation of health information technology.  You might be responsible for training and educating staff on how to use new systems.  You might be called to work with vendors, IT and staff to ensure that everyone is using the technology to its full potential.

You help manage, interpret and communicate vital medical data flowing in and out of doctors’ offices, hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities. You might work in the Information Technology (IT) department instead of the traditional Nursing Department.

Medical software vendors often hire nurses for these roles.  You might also work to develop health information technology, or train other nurses on the latest systems.
