Most companies will have you to apply for a job by completing a job application on the company website or a job board like Monster. Before you dive in and hit submit, you’ll want to prepare beforehand. Follow these steps to streamline the application process:
- Scope out the application process for the companies you want to apply to. If possible, print it out to use as a guide when you complete it online. Use my spreadsheet to track the requirements for each position.
- Determine what you’ll need on hand to apply. A resume and cover letter are standard, but you might also need your license number along with any certifications you have.
- Make sure your resume lists the start and end dates of employment. A lot of online application forms force you to enter both dates.
- Have your list of references handy. This should include the reference name and contact information.
- Don’t use generic file names. Save your resume file name as yournameresume.doc. Do the same with your cover letter. Save the cover letter name as yournamecoverletter.doc.
- Use both formats. Some application websites will allow you to upload your resume. Be sure to check the document format required. The two most common options are a .doc or .pdf format.
- Create profiles on the popular job boards. That way, you can save your job search criteria.
